Q&A – Family Session

Where are you located?
📷 I’m in Oakville, Glen Abbey.

What is your photography style?
đź“· My style is dark and moody, with shadows.

How do we book a session?
đź“· Contact me via the website under contact. I will call you back.

How long does a session last?
đź“· Most session. e.g. Family Session are about 45-60 min in length. Lifestyle sessions in your home are around 60 min.

What should we wear?
📷 Pro Tip: Coordinate, don’t match! When you take this Classic Neutrals approach, matching outfits are not ideal. If everyone is wearing light colors, you need something to provide a bit of contrast so that everyone doesn’t blend together. Please read What to wear for a family session. At the end of the blog is a downloadable guide to help you coordinate your outfits.

What about session location?
đź“· Limited Session may have a set location in mind. For most other session, you can propose a location if it has meaning to you. I will always have a few go to locations to suggest. If a location requires a permit, the client need to apply and pay for the permit in advance.

How far in advance should we book?
đź“· It is recommended to book your session 2-4 weeks in advance. This will allow you to prepare the outfits for your Sesion.

Can we share our photos?
đź“· Of course you are welcome to post your images.

When is the best time for a family outdoor session?
📷 Evenings are always an excellent time for family photos, which is why most of my availability calendar holds evening sessions. If your kids can handle being out after dinner, it’s an easy choice for soft light with the perfect glow. At two hours before sunset, the light is just right to filter through trees and wrap everyone in soft, glowing light without being as hazy or warm as it is during Golden Hour. This is the time most of the photos you see in my portfolio are taken. I love the cleaner light, and the lower angle of the sun provides some great backlighting opportunities. In the summertime, the best time of day for evening photos outdoors is 7pm. In the spring and fall, evening photo sessions are held closer to 5pm

One last thought on session preparation with young children

On last thought, in my 10+ years of taking family pictures, I always see how the parents stress and mood mirrors onto the children. My number one piece of advice is that parent’s set the tone for a session. If you are stressed, worried about getting good photos or that your children will behave, they will pick up on that.

As moms, we have the task to get everyone ready and prepared for a session. My number one rule is to prepare the dad. Yes, the dad, not the kids! Getting dad prepared is key to preparing for your entire family session.

Don’t ask your children  to look at the camera or the photographer. Depending on the age, they won’t be able to take instruction and they will wear out!

Don’t expect your children to “behave” all the time, they will loose interest. We will take small breaks to allow for that and will continue the shoot when they are ready.

Don’t expect to be done in a few minutes. You spent money on the session and we want to ensure we capture images you like.

Don’t try to pose for the camera, posing leads in stiff and award compositions. I will guide you.

Expect that I will ask you to engage with one another instead of looking at me. At least in the beginning while we’re warming up.

Expect that some poses won’t work for you or the kids, don’t worry, we will move on to the next setup.

Do prepare a few things you can say to your children to help them relax, think of a story that made them laugh ahead of the photo session and be ready to tell them the story during the photo session.
